Personal Responsibility
I can't emphasized enough how personal responsibility is so important in the Independence Party. Personal responsibility is one of our party principles and plays a role in our policies, procedures and platform.
What this means to you is that YOU are responsible for keeping yourself up to day on all party activities. Our funding for US mailing is limited. So you need to either email me or look at this web page regularly to know what is happening in your district.
I will do my part by making announcements on this 3rd CD web page. You do YOUR part by checking here often. I will use email to also keep you informed. YOUR responsibilty is to read your party emails when you receive tham.
As always, please email me if you have any questions or suggestions for the 3rd CD. I reply to all emails usually within one day. I hope to see you at a meeting or on the campaign trail soon.

A Message From The Chair
Why Tom Horner is the Best Governor Candidate for OUR Party
It goes without saying that I believe Tom Horner will be the best governor candidate in this year's election. But why do I think Tom is also the best candidate for the Independence Party of Minnesota?
After Ventura was elected and during his 4 years in office, the IP of Minnesota was virtually ignored by Jesse, just as he ignores us today. I served as the IP State Chair before and after his election. During his campaign, he never wanted to be linked to any of our other candidates as much as we tried to get him to. After he won the election, his Campaign Chair and Treasurer insisted that the party NOT benefit in any way from the Ventura victory. If I speculate why this happened, I will say, the reasons were many.
Ventura, upon advice from those closest to him and perhaps due to his own selfishness, insisted that the party was "on their own" when it came to fundraising, supporting any of our candidates and even linking his campaign official web site to the IP website. There were a couple of IP events he supported over 4 years I must admit. But when he left office, we were left without our most visible elected official, and with little organization or money to build and develop a sustainable party to recruit the best

candidates.
In 2002, Tim Penny as our governor candidate, brought his past DFL supporters to his campaign, but just a handful even stuck around a few months to build and support the IP. To his credit, Tim Penny remains today a proud member of the IP and we have benefited and remain very grateful! Thank you Tim!!
Former Rep. Tim Penny
Peter Hutchinson, while a very
smart man, failed to put together a smart campaign, even as experienced IP people advised him to change course in the summer of 2006. We all know that very disappointing result.
I was drawn to Horner initially due to his experience in government and perceived ability to fundraise. Here was an IP candidate who could assume the role of governor and put together a great administration immediately. Ventura did put together a bipartisan (not tri-partisan!) administration and rejected qualified IP people who sought appointments in his administration. The exceptions were Dean Barkley who headed the Department of Planning and Jack Uldrich who was hired by Barkley. Barkley and Uldrich remain visible IP spokespeople. Jack is actually on his second term as state party chair now and has never refused the party when we needed him. I don't know where we would be today without Jack's efforts to recruit Horner.
After a private meeting with Tom Horner in January this year, I knew he was the candidate I was going to support. And I have no

doubts that Tom will not shy away from the IP, either during the campaign or after his election. His web site is already linked to the party web site. Tom announced at the Convention he was not only going to campaign for himself, but for other IP candidates too. He will partner with the IP, make this a team effort and clearly his efforts will enhance our endorsed candidate efforts.
Candidate Tom Horner
So I want to applaud the outcome of the endorsing convention and ask everyone to give Tom 110% support. The IP can and will emerge as a "major" Major Party in November this year and take it's rightful place in Minnesota politics.
Thank you,
Diane Goldman, 3rd CD Chair
