When All Else Fails, Send a Check

We've all been through the dilemma of what to give someone when they reach an important milestone.

Just coming off of the graduation season, many of us tried to find that balance between something inspirational, useful, and, hopefully, enduring. When the recipient is further from our intimate relationship base (co-worker's child, cousin's child, etc.), this task becomes increasingly more difficult. The fall back position when we feel a little out of touch is to send a check or give a gift card. It's the thought that counts, right?

It appears that's what an out of touch US Congress has in mind as seek to show they understand the financial distress in an uncertain economy and the outright pain of $4/gallon gas. Are they boldly crafting a plan that eliminate the deficit spending the directly sucks capital out of our economy? Are they calling for a "moon shot" energy program to reduce our reliance on foreign oil? No. They are taking the easy way out. They are simply debating whether to send you another rebate check. What milestone did you hit? High School Graduation? 40th Birthday? 50th Wedding anniversary? No, your milestone is that you are an eligible voter this fall. There is no better way to show you they care than by keeping the checks coming.

Those of us actively involved in the Independence Party have consistently highlighted the negative effects of the huge federal debt and the deficit spending that keeps feeding this monster. Case in point, the rampant devaluation of the dollar, in part because of the deficit, has had more of an impact on gas prices than increasing world wide demand.

This spring, the federal government gave away over $100 billionto us in "stimulus" checks and charged it to the credit card financed by foreign countries, primarily "China". Let's hope we don't hit the over limit or we'll be in for a cascade of higher borrowing costs. Who will have to pay this back? It's the generation behind us who will spend more of their tax dollars feeding this financial pig with little room to invest in their future security. While there are better economic stimulus ideas out there, it's much easier to send a check.

What can we do?
written by EmeraldPrince , August 08, 2008

What can we do when we have a huge chunk of our businesses moving plants to China and other Southeast Asian Countries? How do we keep them here in the USA?
We have to do something to get businesses to keep manufacturing jobs here in our own country. From what I have read that we don't have the same percentage of tax when these goods enter into our country like we have to pay when our goods go there. I know this is a far out idea but maybe put a tax on businesses that moved their manufacturing to China and those places so that it would be better for them to move back here? What do you think of this fair tax idea that I have read about. Would that make things better?
I wish we could get all the people that supposedly know about economics to meet at one place and hack out a way to get out of this mess and come up with a plan on how to make this economy grow or at least keep it steady. This country did what they could to get gas prices down by conserving and other habits. There has to be a way for people to get together and come up with a way to get this economy fixed.
Ideas??

Give checks, nice try Washington,DC
written by Josh D. Ondich , August 19, 2008

It is another scheme by the political elites to try to save their position of power from the court of public opinion. giving money away in checks niece thought, but never works. It sure did not get me to light my eyes up like a christmas tree, or alot of intelligent minded Americans for that matter. Schemes are nothing new to the 2 party system when it comes to taxes. If they really wanted to have real economic stimulus they would abolish the federal income tax, repeal the 16th amendment and replace it with a national retail sales tax called the Fair Tax. Make our country independent of oil and withdraw from NAFTA, CAFTA, GATT and WTO.
