IP Meetup Recap - Vikes Open Mic

On Monday, November 14 a terrific collection of IP officers, supporters and guests gathered at the Village Pub in St. Anthony for what we labelled a "Vikes Open Mic" - or an informal debate on the Vikings Stadium issue.

Joining in on the conversation were Ramsey County Board chair Victoria Reinhardt, St. Paul Area Chamber of Commerce Director of Public Affairs James McClean, Strong Towns founder Chuck Marohn, IP chairman Mark Jenkins, former gubernatorial candidate Tom Horner as well as many more IP executive officers and district chairs.

What resulted was a lively but respectful discussion about the need for public funding and the variety of potential revenue sources. Though there was incredible diversity of opinion in the room, common strains that ran through the conversation called for greater transparency in the process and accountability to taxpayers should there be a plan moving forward. Multiple attendees expressed their desire to see no source of public funding - general or otherwise. Others preferred to see gambling revenues discussed as an option.

Within days of the meeting state legislators announced two public stadium hearings with the first being held early this week and the second forthcoming.

While the IP legislative affairs committee is working to process the input from the November meet-up and move forward with a set of principles, here is a bit of what participants had to say:

“We need to be able to resolve this one way or another so we can move on to bigger and more important issues.” -Matt Lewis, IP communications director

“I’ve always thought it ludicrous for the state to ask a small group of people to pay for a statewide asset." -Tom Horner, 2010 IP gubernatorial candidate

“My priority is about the cleanup and implementing development of the [Arden Hills] site. My priority is not the Vikings.” -Victoria Reinhardt, Ramsey County Board Chair

“Every metro area that has ever lost a pro sports team has proceeded to build a new stadium a few years down the road to try and lure one back. So if we are going to do this, we need to do it now, rather than paying 2-3 times more, 2-3 years from now.” -Tom Reynolds, SD46 special election candidate (IP), 2011

“The days of unlimited public funding are over!” ~ Tom Schunk, IP at-large executive committee member

“I would cement my support for racino, which has been declared to be constitutional an which most Minnesotans support. However, in all of this we need to remember that jobs and the business climate need to be more important than one football stadium.” -Sally Paulsen, IP treasurer

"In business, they say timing is everything and the Vikings timing couldn’t be worse. They are the last tenant left in the aging Metrodome trying to find a way out at the same time as we are facing budget deficits and delaying payments to school. While the party leadership on both sides play political hot potato with the stadium, a brave group of Legislators are proposing an old idea getting new life: Allow slot machines at Canterbury Park and Running Aces which will create jobs at the tracks, in the agricultural industry, accelerate payment back to schools and –oh-by-the-way, help pay for a Vikings stadium.  Recently a Star Tribune poll showed that over Seventy percent of Minnesotans support this plan." -Cory Merrifield, founder, Save the Vikes (via submitted statement)

Chuck Marohn repeated insights published in a recent post on Vikings stadium sites.
